Conference attendees from 13 countries at Wakayama Lutheran Church
Conference Theme: "Jewish Evangelism in East Asia: Looking for Opportunities, Making Connections"
LCJE Japan sponsored a landmark conference in Wakayama City, Japan to connect churches in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and other parts of East Asia, to Jewish mission organizations from outside the region. LCJE Korea and the Japan Lausanne Committee were supporting organizations for the conference. Attendees from 13 different countries attended (www.lcje.asia). The main conference was held from 13-15 November 2017, with follow-on forums with Japanese Christians held in Osaka and Tokyo on 16 and 18 November, respectively. Besides the main theme of the conference (see above), a theme for one of the days was "Cross-Cultural Jewish Evangelism: Difficulties and Solutions." LCJE Japan Area Coordinator Charles Klingensmith greeted the conference attendees, along with LCJE Korea Area Coordinator Jeong Jacob Lee. Then Charles presented the first session: "And the Gentiiles Shall Come to Thy Light: Three Jewish Trailblazers in Mission to Asia - Isidor Loewenthal, Bernard Jean Bettelheim, and Samuel Isaac Joseph Schereschewsky." (more on Schereschewsky below). The Duo Takase (violin and piano) presented a wonderful mini-concert the first night. The conference hosting team included Charles, the Ishiida brothers (Naoji and Shoji), Makoto Takase (just mentioned) and Isaac Ishiguro.
Conference Presentations
Other conference sessions included: "The Work of CWI in East Asia" (Joseph Steinberg, Sarah Chan and Eugine Yu-Jen Tsai, CWI); "The Work of the Korean Church for Jewish Evangelism" (LCJE Korea personnel); "Jewish, Saved in Asia" (Burton Bialek); "Reaching Out to Jews in the Heart of China"; "A Messianic Congregation in Tokyo" (Paul Uchiyama); "Reaching Out to the Jews of Tokyo" (Noriko Akimoto/Junko Miyamoto); "Jews in Japan/Growing Jewish Tourism" (Shoji Ishiida); "Messianic Resources for Jewish Evangelism" (Barry Rubin); "The Caspari Center for Biblical and Jewish Studies" (Elisabeth Eriksen Levy), "Jewish Evangelism and Theological Education" (Amy Downey, Tzedakah Ministries); "Manga Messiah" (New Life Ministries); "Theological Education in Israel and Jewish Evangelism" (Kenny Lim); "Vision and Mission of One New Man in China, Japan and Korea" (Prof. Dr. Jin Sup Kim, President, Baekseok Theological Seminary, Chairperson, Asia Theological Association-Korea; Chairperson, Israel Theology Forum). This was followed by a "Panel Discussion on Jewish Evangelism in East Asia."
Israeli Travelers Ministries in Asia; Past Japanese Prayer Movement for Israel
There was a major emphasis at the conference on reaching Israeli travelers with the Gospel. Sessions included: "Meeting Yeshua Far from Home: My Story, My Work" (Omri Jaakobovich, HIT - Hosting Israeli Travelers network); "Burgers, Beds, Bibles and Blessings: Guest House Evangelism in New Zealand" (Scott Brown, Celebrate Messiah, New Zealand); "Sightseeing Guide: Reaching Israeli Tourists in Hong Kong" (The Stepping Stones Tutti, Odeliah Tseng and Iris Lo); "Reaching Israeli Tourists: Street Evangelism ABCs" (Bob Mendelsohn, Jews for Jesus). Shoji Ishiida, who took care of many conference logistics, is a staff worker with "A Bridge Between Zion and Japan." He is the Director of Baruch HaBa Kyoto, a recently established free guest house in Kyoto for Messianic Jewish Israeli travelers and their friends. This ministry is described as "a broad network with Israeli Messianic Jews and Asian Christians" who love the Jewish people. They also produced a fascinating video titled, "For Zion's Sake," which tells about the amazing prayer movement in Japan in the 1930s among some believers who prayed for the restoration of Israel. This movement was heavily persecuted and crushed by the authorities, but many believers in Japan remember that praying for the Jewish people has been part of their heritage. Senior Pastor Dr. Byung-Kee Kwon of GUGI Glory Church in Seoul, as well as the Open Society for Intercultural Exchange, Inc. presented on the special cultural programs that they put on in Israel as part of their outreach ministry called "Arirang2" (The One New Man Project of the Next Generation). Among other things, this ministry also supports aliyah ministry as well as ministry to widows and orphans in Israel. Jae-Nam ("Jeremy") Park, Director of the Israel Ministries Network in Korea, also attemded, as well as Executive Chairman of the Israel Ministry Network Pastor Group, Rev. Samuel John Kim. David and Victoria Trubek of Tiferet Yeshua Congregation in Israel also attended and presented their ministry, as well as Robynne B., who is the Director of Hebrew and English Ministries in the greater Tel Aviv area with Chosen People Ministries. Kirsten deSouza represented Jews for Jesus France at the conference.
Visit to the Tokyo Gravesite of Samuel Isaac Joseph Schereschewsky
LCJE International Coordinator Jim Melnick gave the conference keynote address. A special treat for conference participants was a November 17 visit to the grave of renowned Jewish believer Samuel Isaac Joseph Schereschewsky (1831-1906), translator of the Scriptures into Mandarin Chinese, who is buried in Tokyo. Conference participants prayed at the gravesite in multiple languages, thanking the Lord for the life and testimony of this remarkable man. They also recited the Sh'ma and sang "Amazing Grace" - probably the first time in the modern era that such a scene had ever taken place at this grave. Schereschewsky was born in Lithuania into an Orthodox Jewish family before coming to faith. He was an Anglican missionary to China and eventually became Anglican bishop of Shanghai.

11th LCJE European Conference (Berlin, Germany)
14-17 August 2017 (Berlin Stadtmission)
"The Reformation and Its Impact on Jewish Evangelism, Messianic Judaism and Jewish-Christian Relations: 1517-2017-20??"
Panel on "Luther and the Jews" at 11th LCJE European Conference
The focus of the conference was on the legacy of the Reformation and its impact on Jewish-Christian relations, past and present. There was also a focus on the future, searching for God's plan and our role as Protestant and Evangelical believers in Jewish-Christian relations and mission. There was a desire to reach out to the next generation and this was fulfilled: about half of the attendees were newcomers to LCJE, many of them young adults. A new proposal for organizing the European branch of LCJE was also considered.
Over eighty participants from 12 countries, including Israel and the USA, were present at the conference. They issued the following statement titled,"The Reformation and Its Impact on Jewish-Christian Relations and Mission" (click for statement)
LCJE Europe Coordinator Rolf Heitmann's overview of the conference (published in LCJE Bulletin #129, September-October 2017, pp. 6-7) is reproduced here: "11th LCJE European Conference in Berlin."

Conference Statement of the LCJE 10th International Conference, held in Jerusalem from 16-21 August 2015:
From 16th-21st August 2015, more than 200 participants from six continents met in Jerusalem – the city from where the gospel went forth into all nations – for the tenth International Conference of the Lausanne Consultation on Jewish Evangelism (LCJE). LCJE is an international network of agencies, congregations, educational institutions and individuals engaged in mission to the ewish people, and is affiliated with the global Lausanne Movement. LCJE began in 1980 at the Consultation on World Evangelization (COWE) in Thailand as a task force on reaching Jewish people and has grown to include eight regional chapters. LCJE is the longest standing working group within the wider Lausanne Movement and Michael Oh, the CEO of Lausanne, describes Jewish mission as ‘part of our DNA.’ The conference celebrated and honoured the many Hebrew Christians and Messianic Jews who, during the last 2,000 years, have enriched not only the believing Jewish community but also the wider church. At the conclusion of the conference the delegates issued the following statement:
"We, the participants at the 10th International Conference of the Lausanne Consultation on Jewish Evangelism, as Jewish and Gentile followers of Jesus, rejoice that in every generation there have been Jewish people who embrace Jesus as Messiah and continue to identify as Jews.
We thank God for the increasing number of such Jewish people worldwide, especially in the land where Messiah lived, died for our sins, rose from the dead and ascended to the right hand of God.
We rejoice in the impact of a new generation of Jewish followers of Jesus on Israeli society through their bold witness and contribution to the country in education, the arts, health care, the military and start-up companies, and by providing help to the marginalised within society.
We rejoice also that God is working among Arab believers in the land and pray for their effectiveness in proclaiming Jesus in these troubled times.
With the wider Lausanne Movement we affirm that Jesus, through his saving work, has ‘broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility’ and we applaud those Messianic Jews and Arab Christians who live out this reality. We also affirm:
* The Jewishness of Jesus, who, as Israel's Messiah, is the Saviour of the world
* The Jewishness of the Christian faith
* The irrevocable character of God's gifts and calling in relation to Israel
* The special importance of taking the gospel to the Jewish people as an ever-present obligation on the Church, in accordance with Romans 1:16
Encouraged by the promises of God regarding Israel and the evangelistic successes of the past, LCJE is seeking to nurture a new generation of gifted leaders who, empowered by the Holy Spirit, will inspire the worldwide Church to share the life-giving message of Messiah with Jewish people until, as foretold by the apostle Paul in Romans 11:26, ‘all Israel will be saved’!"
(The conference statement is also available in PDF form and can be downloaded here).
